HK Phil presents a diverse range of programs, merging ballet, photography and choral work

This October and November, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) brings you a wide range of programs fusing ballet, photography and choral elements with orchestral music. Accompanied by stunning photography and a live screening, HK Phil’s resident conductor Lio Kuokman presents An Alpine Symphony in Images on October 21-22, 2022 (Friday and Saturday). Lio Kuokman also conducts Romeo and Juliet on October 28 and 29, 2022 (Friday and Saturday), with the Hong Kong Ballet (HKB) on stage in a special appearance. Finally, HK Phil’s Principal Guest Conductor Yu Long conducts HK Phil x HKU Muse: Yu Long | Fauré Requiem on November 4 & 5, 2022 (Fri & Sat), presenting Fauré’s peaceful and transcendent choral work, as part of a poetic encounter between Eastern and Western music.

An alpine symphony in pictures (October 21 & 22)

HK Phil’s resident conductor Lio Kuokman takes an oversized orchestra on an audio-visual journey up the mountains: waterfalls, glaciers and jaw-dropping views, plus stunning images of the Alps by photographer Tobias Melle in Richard Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony . Sharing the evening, versatile violinist Alena Baeva plays the luscious Violin Concerto by Korngold – the Viennese genius who rose to fame in Hollywood. The concert opens with Richard Strauss’ Festliches Präludium.

An Alpine Symphony in Pictures will be held on October 21 and 22, 2022 (Friday and Saturday) at 8 p.m. in the Hong Kong Cultural Center Concert Hall. Tickets priced at HK$520, $420, $320 and $220 are available at URBTIX and POPTICKET. For inquiries, please call +852 2721 2332 or visit hkphil.org.

Romeo and Juliet (October 28)

Swire Saturday Family Series: Romeo and Juliet (October 29)

The HK Phil and resident bandleader Lio Kuokman celebrate the 425th anniversary of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with three of the most popular musical arrangements from this timeless story. Written by Tchaikovsky, who drew deep inspiration from Shakespeare, the love theme of Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy-Overture has become one of his most memorable melodies. This is followed by the symphonic dances of Bernstein’s West Side Story, in which the warring Montagues and Capulets become New York street gangs – the Sharks and the Jets. The groundbreaking musical was recently remade into a new Steven Spielberg movie. To conclude the concert, HKB dancers join the HK Phil in scenes from Prokofiev’s brilliant ballet, with spectacular choreography by HKB artistic director Septime Webre.

Romeo and Juliet will take place on October 28 and 29, 2022 (Friday and Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Theater of the Hong Kong Cultural Center. The October 29, 2022 performance is a Swire Saturday Family Series concert. Tickets priced at HK$420, $320 and $220 are available at URBTIX. For inquiries, please call +852 2721 2332 or visit hkphil.org.

HK Phil x HKU Muse: Yu Long | Requiem by Fauré (November 4 & 5)

HK Phil’s principal guest conductor Yu Long brings together elements of East and West in a program featuring erhu soloist Yiwen Lu, soprano Anna Zhang Jingdan, baritone Caleb Woo, HK Phil Chorus Fellows and the HKU Chamber Singers.

Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, a large-scale choral work filled with a sense of warmth and serenity, contrasts perfectly with the colorful and lively Overture to Berlioz’s Roman Carnival which opens the concert. Chen Qigang’s modern masterpiece Un Temps Disparu for Erhu and orchestra presents a deeply poetic encounter between Eastern and Western musical traditions.

HK Phil x HKU Muse: Yu Long | Fauré Requiem will be held on November 4, 2022 (Fri) at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Tsuen Wan City Hall and on November 5, 2022 (Sat) at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the University of Hong Kong. Tickets priced at HK$420, $320 and $220 are available at URBTIX and POPTICKET. For inquiries, please call +852 2721 2332 or visit hkphil.org.
