Photography competition launched to shine a light on North Ayrshire

Budding photographers are invited to put their skills to the test for a new competition which aims to shine the spotlight on North Ayrshire.

People of all ages who live, work or study in the area can participate in ‘Stories Through the Lens’ with vouchers to be won.

Participants are invited to step out and capture the essence of North Ayrshire on camera. In addition to a stunning image, the judges want the words to bring the visual to life.

The competition is organized by the North Ayrshire Council to mark 2022 – the Scottish Year of Stories.

There are three themes to inspire participants – Local Tales and Legends; The People and Places of Scotland and Inspired by Nature.

People can enter four age categories with £100, £50 and £25 vouchers for Decathlon going to the top three finishers in each.

Photos submitted may feature in local media and North Ayrshire Council marketing materials.

The final photographs for each category will be printed and displayed in the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Irvine alongside a digital gallery of the other valid photos of entrants on the selected dates in June/July 2022.

Caitriona McAuley, Manager (Economic Development and Regeneration) said: “North Ayrshire is an area rich in history, culture and incredible scenery.

“It’s a place where there are plenty of opportunities to capture what you think makes North Ayrshire beautiful.

“So why not take a train or a bus, get on your bike or take a walk around North Ayrshire with your phone or camera and enter our photo contest.”

The contest opens on April 1 and closes at midnight on May 8. The categories are: Primay 1-4; P5-7; S2-6 and anyone over the age of 18.

Attendees will be able to take advantage of two writing workshops to be held at the Trinity Active Travel Hub in Irvine on Thursday, April 21 (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and Saturday, April 23 (2 to 4 p.m.).

To enter, email photos to: [email protected], including your name, address, contact details and age category.

Submissions should include a short paragraph describing each photograph, including where and when it was taken, the Year of Stories theme it relates to and why you think it shows the beauty of North Ayrshire and tells the history of the region.

Winners will be chosen by Friday, May 20 and notified thereafter.

All winners will also have their photos professionally printed and displayed in the Trinity Active Travel Hub.
