Soap Gallery Displays ‘Black’ Photography | News, Sports, Jobs

The photography exhibition “Altered Black” opens Friday at the Youngstown Soap Gallery.

“We wanted to put together a photography exhibition that wasn’t just generalized photography,” said gallery co-owner Stephen Poullas. “We wanted it to have some kind of specificity. I really like the look of the film and wanted to put together a show based on digital footage edited to look like noir style or using film photography as the basis for the show.

Nearly 50 works by 16 artists will be exhibited. About half of the work was filmed and the other half is digital.

“There is a lot of black and white in the series” said Poullas. “I have three black and white images that I shot in the show. If you work with photography, you can tell if something is film photography. There’s a lot more contrast. It definitely looks different.

In addition to Poullas, participating artists include Joyce Newell, Nikki Puccini, Shannon Fee, Ashley Dillon, Noah Smedley, Saundra Lynne, Jeffery Puccini, Dovey Wovey, James Shuttic, Diane Beatty, Tommy Myers, Aaron Newell, Monica Rojas, George Nelson and Abby Rose.

An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and the work will be on display until July 29.
