A brand new award recognizing stories around climate change is one of the highlights of the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards, which await the best work from photographers.
Now seen as the premier competition for photographers and artists working in photography, the Sony World Photography Awards were, at launch, seen as no more than a marketing decision, one that would help Sony make its mark. a place in the photography market, as the company had acquired, in 2005, the SLR business of Konica Minolta. In the end, photographers took over the Sony World Photography Awards and made them what they are today: a benchmark in annual photography competitions for professionals and amateurs alike.
Created by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards are held annually. Made up of four competitions (Professional, Open, Student and Youth), all entries are free and the top prize is $25,000. The awards are considered one of the most prestigious photography competitions in the world in elevating the careers of photographers – from established to emerging – since its inception 16 years ago.
Sony supports the Awards to contribute to the continued development of photographic culture by providing a global platform for today’s talent. Entry to the awards is, as previously stated, completely free and photographers are judged anonymously by a panel of top judges.
The organizers have just announced the judging panel for the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards, along with new prizes and exhibit items. These include the launch of a $5,000 prize in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and a new solo presentation for Photographer of the Year.
The 2023 exhibition returns to Somerset House, London, from April 14 to May 1, 2023. The 2022 exhibition continues to travel internationally, including the first-ever presentations of the awards at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, California ( October 8, 2022 – March 19, 2023) and Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, UK (November 10 – December 11, 2022).
A new format for the Youth competition
The newly announced Sustainability Prize has one goal: to recognize stories, people and organizations whose actions highlight one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These can include depictions of climate change, a spotlight on green technologies and innovations, or a celebration of individuals and groups working to make a difference.
The Sustainability Prize rewards the winning photographer with a cash prize of $5,000 and a presentation of their project at the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in London. All photographers participating in the professional contest are eligible to win the prize.
Also new this year is a new element for the Photographer of the Year award. In addition to the cash prize of $25,000, a range of Sony digital imaging equipment and inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition and book, the winner will also be awarded with a live presentation. solo of his work as part of the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in London. the next year. This opportunity allows photographers to further develop their winning project or exhibit a whole new work, giving them additional exposure and furthering their careers. The first of these presentations will be dedicated to the work of 2022 Photographer of the Year Adam Ferguson (Australia) and will take place during the exhibition at Somerset House in April 2023.
The 2023 Sony World Photography Awards also introduces a new format to the competition for young people, opening it up to anyone under the age of 19 and inviting entrants to submit up to three images related to the theme Your Everyday. The judges will select a shortlist of 10 photographers who will compete for the title of Young Photographer of the Year.
In 2023, the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition opens at Somerset House, London, from April 14 to May 1, 2023. Following the London exhibition and a subsequent presentation in Tokyo, the Sony World Photography Awards 2022 exhibition continues to travel to a variety of international locations, like previous editions.

- Opening: January 6, 2023, 1:00 p.m. GMT
- Student: November 30, 2022, 1:00 p.m. GMT
- Youth: January 6, 2023, 1:00 p.m. GMT
All winners of the Professional, Open, Youth and Student competition categories will receive digital imaging equipment from Sony. Additionally, cash prizes of $25,000 (USD) will be given to Photographer of the Year and $5,000 (USD) to Open Photographer of the Year. All works by the winning and shortlisted photographers will be exhibited at the annual Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in London and will then tour internationally. Winning images will also be published in the annual awards book. The big winners will be announced on April 13, 2023.
